Ford's High-Performance F-150 Lightning: Perfect for Off-Road Thrills

Ford's High-Performance F-150 Lightning Perfect for Off-Road Thrills

Electric vehicles have been mainly designed for city streets and highways, steering clear of rough terrains like mud puddles. However, Ford's latest creation, the F-150 Lightning Switchgear, takes a different route, embracing the thrill of gravel and mud. This electric truck is a one-off high-performance demonstrator born from a collaboration between Ford, champion drift driver Vaughn Gittin Jr., and his tuning company RTR Vehicles.

A year ago, Ford gave a sneak peek of this high-performance demonstrator, derived from the F-150 Lightning, with CEO Jim Farley revealing a portion of its front end. Now, the cover is off, unveiling the F-150 Lightning Switchgear as a robust, all-electric off-road demonstrator. This vehicle serves as a testbed, showcasing Ford's capabilities in handling extreme off-road conditions and is a result of creative collaboration with Gittin Jr., who previously worked with Ford on the F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun Haver project in 2016.

The Switchgear, joining the ranks of other demonstrators like the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, Mustang Mach-E 1400, Cobra Jet 1400, and F-100 Eluminator, will make its public debut at the King of the Hammers off-road racing event on January 25th in Johnson Valley, California.

The truck's appearance is marked by carbon composite add-ons, such as protruding front fenders, front and rear bumper covers, and a livery paying homage to Ford Performance, the automaker's in-house racing division. Ford crafted two versions of the Switchgear: one for the street and the other for off-roading. The street variant features 33.23-inch Nitto NT420V tires, while the off-road version boasts massive 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers, along with extra tires in the truck's bed, steel bumpers, skid plates, and rock rails.

Ford focused on two key areas during the Switchgear's development: chassis and suspension. The independent front suspension adopts a double-wishbone configuration, while the rear opts for semi-trailing arms. With an 80-inch front and rear track width, the Switchgear promises "significant" stability compared to the regular F-150 Lightning. The suspension utilizes Fox three-inch diameter internal bypass shock absorbers and unique front and rear bumpers to enhance approach and departure angles.

While Ford currently has no immediate plans for Switchgear production, it leaves the door open for potential features to make their way to future trucks. The F-150 Lightning Switchgear is not just an electric truck; it's a statement of performance and capability in the realm of off-road adventures.
